EXO, GOT7, MONSTA X, Blackpink, Red Velvet, and Twice are just some Korean pop groups that took America by storm. Before those groups were heard of by Americans, there were only a few people who knew about those countries’ music. Now, you can ask almost anyone about them, especially about K-pop, and most people will say they know some of the groups, especially about Blackpink, which performed at Coachella back in 2019. Not only that, but films such as Parasite, The Farewell, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, and Raya and the Last Dragon have also become known in other countries than the ones that they were produced in. Before COVID-19, people would be going to movies, concerts, and events such as Anime Expo or KCON together, or even find new friendships and relationships there, some which would last forever. Those common interests such as having the same liking for music, movies, and others brought people and communities together, making some people have a sense of belonging.

Personally, I try not to have relationships and friendships with a lot of people, mainly because of how many times I’ve been backstabbed by my exes and friends. However, back in middle school most of my then friends actually became my friends through K-pop, especially SHINee and EXO. From my personal experience, stanning the same groups and having a liking for the same genre of music brought many people together and many people also found a sense of belonging.

Although music, movies, and others brought people together, this world is far from being united. There has been discrimination towards Asians since the Gold Rush, maybe even before, as a result of Asians taking Americans’ jobs because all they wanted to do was provide for their family, or coincidentally being the start of pandemics. There has been Asian Hate for centuries, but from COVID-19, there has been way more. Asians have been killed, beaten, and talked about just because they are or look Asian, although they did nothing wrong. Political leaders have also been racist to Asians, such as Trump. Due to the fact that Trump was a political leader, there were people that followed him and believed in what he believed in, which was that America should only be whites and not other races. As a result, there has been an increase in racism towards Asians from Trump’s presidency. What Trump and his followers did not consider though was how Asians changed America for the better; increasing their economy and inventing objects that are still used today. America is far from being united, and it will never be if political leaders are acting like little kids that only whine about everything.

The world still has to change in so many ways until it becomes united, and art, music, and literature is a start to that. People have found a sense of belonging and community through all sorts of cultural productions, and maybe 50 years from now the world will be united and there would be no more wars and violence.
